We are delighted to announce that graduate AMBER COOPER-DAVIES has been nominated in this year’s WIA awards for her animated film ‘The Nuclear Age in Six Movements‘. This competition, awarded by the AOI and Directory of Illustration, celebrates the most creative and inspiring work the industry has to offer and is judged by a panel of international experts in the field.
‘The Nuclear Age in Six Movments’ was used both to punctuate an event commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, and online by a group campaigning for the abolition of Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). Below are some stills from the film;
“I was particularly concerned with conveying the emotional aspects of the issue alongside the historical facts, as this era is often portrayed in a manner that disconnects it from human experience. I wanted to focus on the expression in the movement of the characters in order to balance a human element of the story with the seriousness of the subject matter. I also used a minimal black and white style in order to depict tragic circumstances without letting the work become to graphic or grotesque. I also wanted to end focus on ending with a feeling of hope for the future, to reflect that although surprising to some people, most of the Hibakusha prefer to focus on a future of peace rather than the experiences of the past.”
