COURSE NEWS: POETRY CAFE

HIDDEN IN THE LINES is our latest exhibition with with Poetry Society. Featuring paintings, prints and drawings by Middlesex Illustration students across all three years the show is a response to Inside Out, a collection of poetry for children. Below are some samples from the show.

‘Hidden in the Lines’ is at The Poetry Café, 22 Betterton Street, London WC2H 9BX, 7 February – 16 March 2019. All works are for sale; proceeds go towards the students’ final degree show.

DRAWING AT THE BRITISH MUSEUM

Each year the BA Illustration course spend a week on site at a location in London. STUDENT WORK ARCHIVES: THE QUIET UTOPIA IN THE CELLAR

TARO QURESHI graduated from our course in 2015. As part of his final major project he created ‘The Quiet Utopia In The Cellar’, an illustrated book about what might occur during the course of a series of therapy sessions. Below are just a few of the pages;

“Within this book there is automatic writing, introspection, shouting, noiseless violence, chaos, fatalistic vomiting and many other things that tend to crop up during therapy sessions.

THE DRAWN CHORUS COLLECTIVE PRESENTS ‘EASY AS’

The DRAWN CHORUS COLLECTIVE are a group of Middlesex Illustration graduates who have been working together on a variety of exhibitions and publications since 2013. Their latest project, EASY AS is a fully illustrated 64 page ABC book featuring illustrations by The Chorus plus a number of guest artists.

Showcasing an eclectic mix of styles the book takes an illustrative romp through the alphabet by way of animals, darkness, zeppelins, mysteries and much, much more.

GRADUATE WORK: DAVID BOWIE

Since his passing in January hundreds of creatives have used their craft to pay homage to the late, great David Bowie. The students and alumni of the Middlesex Illustration BA are no exception. This Friday (February 28th) graduates JASMINE BRADY and SALOME PAPADOPOULLOUS will be part of the THE SHACKLEWELL ARMS’ tribute night, selling limited edition Bowie postcards. Check them out below;

GRADUATE WORK: THE NUTCRACKER

Having graduated from Middlesex’s Illustration BA in 2012, EILEEN KAI HING KWAN has gone on to exhibit her work in a number of exhibitions- both at home and abroad- and has become a staple of the Walthamstow’s vibrant art scene. Eileen was also shertlisted for an AOI Award in 2013.

Recently she collaborated with fellow local Walthamstow artist Carl Harris (CatBoy) to create ‘The Nutcracker’, an exhibition of drawings inspired by  Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet. For this Eileen chose to explore the magic and delight of the relationship between Clara and the Nutcracker; from their first meeting on Christmas Eve to their journey to The Land of Sweets following their victory over the Mouse King- all intricately illustrated in pencil and gouache;

THE DRAWN CHORUS COLLECTIVE PRESENTS ‘TALES FROM THE DEEP’

The Drawn Chorus is a collective of illustrators largely composed of graduates from Middlesex’s Illustration BA. Working together since 2013 the group has organised three large-scale exhibitions; Curiouser and Curiouser, The Greatest Show on Earth and AHOY!. Recently they branched into the world of self-publishing with Tales from the Deep. Featuring a narrative and plot outlines by FRED CAMPBELL, the book is a 100 page graphic novel anthology collecting ten sea stories penned, drawn and paper cut by members of the collective plus guest artists including 2nd year tutor MARTIN URSELL.
